Establishing Farming Habitat – Integrating Nature Education into Our School-Based Curriculum

In early 2023, L H Education established Farming Habitat in Tseung Kwan O Village – a natural, immersive outdoor learning space brimming with discoveries. That same year, Learning Habitat incorporated Nature Education into our school-based curriculum, with programmes designed by our Curriculum Development Team. This initiative takes students beyond the classroom to explore, experience, and appreciate nature’s wonders firsthand at Farming Habitat!

Farming Habitat features cultivated farmland and vegetable gardens, grasslands and a meandering stream, greenhouses, mud kitchens, and a constructive play area. Here, students complete hands-on nature missions, using tools to plant and harvest crops while discovering the joys of farming. They engage in exploratory activities to connect with nature's beauty, unleashing creativity by crafting mud-based "dishes" or constructing play structures. Through partnerships with wildlife organisations, students enjoy "Animal Encounters", interacting with creatures like lizards, hedgehogs, and guinea pigs. These experiences build confidence in observing and gently handling animals while fostering respect for life.

Beyond student activities, we invite parents to join family farming sessions, parent-child nature games, and outdoor relaxation exercises. These moments allow families to pause from urban routines and cherish nature's simple joys together.

We believe this is more than Nature Education – it's Life Education. From appreciating local flora and fauna, students learn empathy, respect, and love for themselves, others, and the natural world, growing into healthy, vibrant, and positive-minded individuals.

Farming Habitat Parent Volunteer Program

Launched in June 2024, this program invites parent volunteers to assist with farming and land maintenance at Farming Habitat. Each season, dozens of enthusiastic volunteers help expand crop diversity and yield, creating richer exploration opportunities for students.

Participants report immense satisfaction, gaining agricultural knowledge while escaping the urban bustle to enjoy nature's tranquility. Thanks to their efforts, crop production has significantly increased, with harvests shared among Learning Habitat students, parents, and staff, providing fresh, homegrown produce for all to enjoy.
